Barkley for Mayor?

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley told “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno on Wednesday that he is interested in running for Mayor of his hometown, Leeds, Alabama. Leeds is located 18 miles from Birmingham and has a population of around 11,000.

“Leeds is the greatest place in the world,” Barkley told Leno, “but it needs to do better and I’m the man for the job!”

Barkley told Leno that family members have been telling him to run for Mayor for about six weeks and that he is seriously considering it. Barkley said he believes there are “too many crooks on the City Council,” and that he can “do better than the people that are doing stuff there now.”

Barkley played 16 seasons in the NBA and retired before the 1999-2000 season. He is now a studio analyst for TNT, and told Leno that after the Mayor’s race, “Governor (of Alabama) is down the line.” The election is August 26 and Barkley has until July 15 to declare his candidacy.
